Swachhtha pakhwada By ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair


ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair, along with its KVKs at Sippighat, Nimbudera, and Car Nicobar, and Regional Station at Minicoy, Lakshadweep, organised a fortnightly programme under Swachhta Pakwada from December 16th to December 30th, 2022. Various activities were conducted by involving the staff, their families, and farmers from nearby villages. At the outset, all staff took the Swachhta Pledge and planted various tree saplings on the Garacharma Research Farm. All office records were sorted out, and old files, furniture, and junk materials were disposed of. A scientific team visited the farmers at Creekabad village and gave agro-advisories on how to maintain hygiene and sanitation in a fish pond and goat and pig sheds. A biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste management awareness programme was held for fishermen at the Junglighat fish landing centre and fish market. On December 23,2022, on the occasion of Kisan Diwas, a live streaming was set up in which Shri. Narendra Singh Tomar, Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, addressed farmers via video conference. A painting competition on cleanliness was conducted for the school students. Massive community mobilisation for plastic waste shramdaan was conducted at Bathubasthi, in which the public was urged to curb the use of single-use plastic and discourage the use of plastic in the workplace, compost kitchen and home waste materials, and promote clean and green technologies and organic farming practices. All the staff of CIARI went on a rally through the residential area to create awareness about efficient waste disposal mechanisms, rainwater harvesting, sewage maintenance, and cleaning the drainage lines. They also visited the waste disposal site at CIARI and learned about how to segregate household waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials and how to convert waste into compost. On December 30, 2022, PBMC Chairperson Smt. U. Kavitha participated in the Swachhta activity along with all the staff of CIARI at the Garacharma campus and appreciated the efforts to keep the campus neat and clean.
